‘Catwoman #1’ (review)

Written and Illustrated by Joelle Jones
Published by DC Comics

I’m not going to tell you what happens in Batman #50. The cover of this references that and I found it hilarious. That’s all Joelle Jones’ doing , who both writes and Illustrates this issue. She is a mix of Paul Pope and Becky Cloonan  and she’s just excellent. This is a sharp and smart start to a great new series.

Coming off the events of Batman #50, Catwoman is back on the streets of Gotham City. Jones starts us right off in the middle of an action scene. It seems to be a Catwoman copycat is on the loose. The copycat is firing a gun and is on the run!

Jones immediately establishes that it’s not Selina.

Selina can’t sleep and is gambling. Then the cops track her down. They try to arrest her. She then makes an incredible escape that is well choreographed by Jones. It’s exciting and fluid.

But this leads to a bigger mystery: who is committing these acts and what is their goal?

Selina starts to track down the responsible parties. It’s just the first part of the story and it moves super quick. Selina follows all of the clues to a warehouse where there is a big surprise.

But what does it mean? Hell if I know. I’m just excited to see where it goes.

The writing is tight and taut. The artwork is super fluid and is kinetic. The colors by Laura Allred are especially good and a real treat. I loved the setup in this issue. It’s a good time and we need a good Catwoman series. This one seems fit to fill the bill.

RATING: A
