‘Batwoman #18’ (review)

Written by Marguerite Bennett
Illustrated by Fernando Blanco
Published by DC Comics

I recently read all of the recent Batwoman series up until this issue. So, I was ready for this when it landed. And I’m glad I did. This is an excellent issue and an excellent ending to the most recent storyline.

It’s definitely the best treatment that the character has received since J.H. Williams III left the book. And that’s a real shame as it’s the last issue of the current series.

In the opening scene of this book, Batwoman has crashed a party of villains led by the Clock King.

And they are ready for her!

The villains are told that Batwoman has come to prevent them from attaining their collective destinies.

That’s all that they need to hear because they are immediately on the offense from there!

She has to team with Renee Montoya to bring these villains down.

The following scene is wonderfully crazy and a bit esoteric. It’s also beautifully drawn by artist Fernando Blanco. He’s come into his own with the style on this book and it’s excellent. The fight scene are nice but he’s got a flavor all of his own. We see how the current battle is reflected in Batwoman’s past.

It’s also an issue about moving on and letting someone new into your heart. To survive, that’s exactly what Kate Kane has to do here. Can she survive the battle physically and the one she is facing emotionally? Is there still time for her?

Bennett wraps this all up wonderfully. The art works beautifully with it as well. The last image of the book is one of hope. I know Kate Kane will be back (she’s getting her own tv series!) but this issue has a beautiful ending. It’s a perfect coda for this 18 issue series.

RATING: A-
