‘Cave Carson Has An Interstellar Eye #6’ (review)

Written by Jon Rivera
Illustrated by Mike Avon Oeming
Published by DC Comics

Well, this is it. The last issue of Cave Carson. It’s been a fun ride on these Young Animal titles and I’m sad to see them go. It’s been an amusing ride indeed.

Now, these characters get sent off into the sunset with a really nice last issue.

Cave and the gang meet up with the King in the beginning of this issue. They have fallen into his land, and are just trying to get home. Cave starts off with saying that the look on the King’s face looks very telling. It almost looks like that they have no future left.

Throughout the issue, the question is asked repeatedly if these characters will ever get home.

Rivera writes a smart, emotional tale.

A lot of tears are shed and a lot of the characters and their various storylines get wrapped up.

Through it all, it’s smart and funny and very human.

They travel a bunch of different landscapes in their travels in these 24 pages and they are all magnificently realized by Oeming. The layouts and design work are especially cool as the gang is traveling through time and space.

I felt the ending was a bit weak. I don’t want to spoil it, but it left me a bit cold. I was like “that’s it?”

Especially the last line.

But with a book like this it’s all about the journey. And that journey has been pretty excellent indeed.

RATING: A-
