The first splash page image in this book is quite spectacular.
It’s a picture of Batman and the Scarecrow meeting up and the perspective on it is incredible. Kelley Jones hasn’t drawn this well in years. It makes this story all the more enjoyable. This series definitely is much, much better than I was expecting.
So the Scarecrow is loose in Gotham City. Batman is trying to drag this criminal back to Arkham Asylum. The problem is that the Scarecrow has hit Batman with a dose of his fear toxin!
This causes Batman to see his villains and other various terrifying visions around him.
After a scene of that, Batman is woken up by Commissioner Gordon.
Gordon helps Batman get his bearings and sets him off into the right direction. Peterson makes the book one that is easy to read and even easier to digest.
Then, there is a four page wordless scene that is very effective. This shows Jones to be an effective storyteller. Batman infiltrates an apartment building and it’s just done with good comic book art. It’s quite impressive.
From there, Batman tracks down the Scarecrow and by the end of the issue he finds him. The problem is that the toxin starts hitting him hard. And as that happens, the imagery becomes crazier! It’s psychological and dark and quite fun to read.
The story is very basic but enjoyable and it works well with the art. This isn’t going to blow people’s mins but it will give them a lot of entertainment. It’ll be interesting to see if this can continue the good time in future issues, but for now? I’ll just enjoy it.
