‘The Dreaming #1’ (review)

Written by Si Spurrier
Illustrated by Bilquis Evely
Published by Vertigo Comics

I’m not going to lie. I had a hard time getting into this issue. It’s been awhile since Neil Gaiman ended his Sandman and that’s where my interest ended. It was great to read but I sort of had my fill.

So when this came along, I was iffy on reading it. I’m glad I did though, as the series isn’t half bad.

As this issue starts out, Dream has completely abandoned his realm! The walls of the Dreaming are burning and being torn down! The whole realm is going crazy! Lucien is doubting what is real and what is not! Who can possibly put this all back together?

Everything is turning to madness.

The only me that is benefiting from all of this is Dora.

She’s like a dream pimp, as it were. She is taking these various dreams and she is selling them to the highest bidder. But this is becoming more dangerous than she originally thought possible.

And so we are off! It’s actually a lot more fun than I thought it would be. All of the original cast is here including my favorite, Merv Pumpkinhead.

Admittedly, something is missing with Dream not being here. He makes a faux appearance in this issue but you do feel the absence.

Spurrier’s story keeps you interested however. He does a great job keeping the feel from Gaiman’s book alive. The art is very good as well. I’m interested to see what they do with it. Let’s see where it goes.

RATING: B+
