‘Red Hood and the Outlaws #27’ (review)

Written by Scott Lobdell
Illustrated by Pete Woods
Published by DC Comics

This book has been getting increasingly weirder and wonderful.

Last month, we were given a crazy issue and it changed the Red Hood. This issue is a little more close to home and it affects the Jason Todd identity. Lobdell does it again in this issue and gives us a hell of a story full of emotions.

This issue opens up with a full page splash of Jason leaving a message for Roy Harper.

It’s Spoiler Alert time. In the latest miniseries called Heroes in Crisis, Roy meets an untimely fate.

Automatically, we feel for Jason because we know that he is going to find out.

Lobdell then takes us to a truck stop.

A trucker is hitting on a waitress. Jason then come in and he makes a joke. Then, he starts a fight with trucker and takes him out. Then, another trucker gets the drop on him.

At the last second, he is saved by Bruce Wayne. We all know that this can’t possibly be a good thing!

Bruce tells Jason a few things. He tells him that he’s never allowed to come back to Gotham. He tells him that the Penguin isn’t dead yet. And he tells him that his friend Roy Harper is dead.

It’s an emotional scene that Lobdell handles beautifully. Everything feels honest and real. It hit me right in the heart strings and I admired how well this was handled. Bruce then leaves and the power of the scene resonates as he does.
Lobdell then sets up the next story and it’s interesting as well. I’m excited to see where he takes us next. The art by Woods is especially nice and excellent. This is another solid issue in an amazing run.

RATING: A-
