This issue begins with one big fight in the Phantom Zone!
Bendis just starts off with an epic battle that just does not let up. Everything feels like it’s been leading up to this and Bendis just cuts loose.
It isn’t just Rogol Zaar Superman is fighting here.
You see, Zaar has a huge Phantom Zone army at his disposal. And the scary part is, they are all full of rage for Superman. The first third of the book is the first part of this fight scene. It’s wonderfully drawn by Ivan Reis.
Reis draws the action very clean. Yet, you feel how incredibly epic it is. He makes every panel count. And he works so well with the writing that the whole thing just is spectacular.
Then, Bendis cuts to a scene of Jon and Superman in a junkyard. It’s a scene that is heartfelt. Bendis then intercuts this scene with that of the battle in the Phantom Zone. It makes for a nice way of telling the rest of the story.
Superman and Rogol Zaar go at it! He enlists both the Flash and the Atom in his quest. He formulates a strong plan. He executes it. And it ends with one of my favorite and weird characters appearing.
That’s right, Bendis is set to take on Adam Strange!
The writing is wonderful as usual. Again, I love when Ivan Reis draws this character. This is another fantastic issue in the Bendis era on Superman. I’m glad he’s here doing what he does. It’s been a golden time indeed.
