‘The Terrifics #9’ (review)

Written by Jeff Lemire
Illustrated by Viktor Bogdanovic
Published by DC Comics

“Hrnnn”

Who… is… Doctor… Dread!?!

We’ll if you enjoy comics as much as Jeff Lemire evidently does, then you probably already suspect by now.

But if not – have no fear! The man beneath the mask stands revealed this issue.

After unleashing an army of Dread-bots… sorry Dread Drones… to defeat his enemies, that is. And blowing up Gotham of course.

If that sounds cliché, don’t worry Lemire agrees with you – and he is not phased in the least.

On the contrary it’s quite clear by this issue that he’s counting on us to join him in all the fun. And with the first major story arc of his new premier super-team coming ‘round 3rd base, an arc that pays homage to not one but two all-time classic super family comics teams, it’s hard to miss that point.

This is exactly the sort of brilliance that Jeff Lemire has made a name for himself with, and it is gratifying to see it come together after all these issues. And even with Dale Eaglesham gone missing this month, at least we have the fantastic Jose Luis along for the ride.

The key pieces have all been in place since the beginning, all it has needed is some deft storytelling, and the added fanfare of Tom Strong and his amazing family, a string of out-of-this-world adventures, a few well-placed T-sphere’s, a little girl power, and hail, hail, the gang’s all here.

Ready to bring their adversary’s plans around his ears.

Too bad for them Doc Dread is no stranger to adaptation.

Join us next month for the confrontation that we’ve all been waiting for. And the noble sacrifice that was bound to happen…

It’s Terrific! It’s Strong! I’m not talking about coffee! …Really!

Next Issue: Sapphire Blues!
