This is the penultimate chapter of the first storyline by Joelle Jones. That means a lot of things happen in this issue.
Jones accelerates the pace a bit here and it’s really jumpstarts this book. It’s actually goes by so fast it doesn’t let you catch a breath and I liked that very much.
Selina Kyle has a sister, Maggie, and she’s in some trouble. It seems she’s involved in some pretty crazy and illegal stuff. And Catwoman is trying to figure out just what that is.
Catwoman gets a name for who is the villain. It is Raina Creel, the Governor’s wife! (It’s pretty obvious by the structure of the story).
In the opening sequence of the issue, we see Raina hurting a doctor.
It’s intercut with Selina fighting for her life while trying to find clues about what happened to her sister. She’s in a state of rage and she’s going to stop at nothing to accomplish her goal. It’s some pretty harrowing stuff!
The rest of the issue is pretty much the same pattern. The fighting is well composed and Jones really knows what she is doing. It’s clean and the speed lines make everything fluid. You can make out everything what is happening clearly and it’s very cool.
There are points where it’s a little too quick and we lose some of the dramatic impact, but it ends on a high note so all is forgiven. It also whets your appetite for the next issue.
The writing works incredibly well with the art. Jones is a decent writer as well as being the artist. I wish there was a little more meat to the story. That being said, I was never bored and I was at the edge of my seat for most of it.
This is a nice first story arc by Jones. This issue is at it’s best when Jones amps up the action. Now all that remains is seeing if she can bring it home next issue. All signs point to “yes.”
