Here it is. The final chapter of one of the best series of the past year. Tom King has written the best story this character has seen and this is for sure the definitive Mister Miracle story. I honestly don’t see anyone topping this for some time to come. It’s a modern day classic.
This issue opens up with an almost psychedelic page of Mister Miracle performing a weird stage performance. It’s completely strange but it’s also a lot of fun. Looking closely at the art, you can see that artist Mitch Gerads has put a few people from comics into the audience like himself, Tom King and Nick Derington. It’s a cool start to the book.
Then we cut over to a normal, slice of life scene. Scott Free is showering and Barda walks into the room. Yet, something is off.
Things seem normal but there’s something lying there beneath the surface. Something that might threaten everything as they know it.
Scott gets out of the showers and shaves his long beard. But then he starts seeing images in the mirror of Granny Goodness. And then reality as he knows it comes apart.
Gerads really works overtime here to demonstrate that and the art is trippy and crazy. Yet, you can always tell what is going on.
At the end of it all, Scott has to deal with what Darkseid is.
I assure you, you’ve never seen this ending happen in a comic book before. King just knocks it out of the park. He writes a tale that is a satisfying ending for all of us who have invested their time into it.
The ending is wonderful and bittersweet. The reader has all their questions answered by the end.
King and Gerads have done something amazing. They have created a series that is amazing to read and that will hold up if you re-read it again, looking for new things you might have missed the first time around.
