This issue starts off with the newly minted Ric Grayson coming face to face with Nightwing. Someone is dressed up in the Nightwing costume and it isn’t Ric! Has the bullet that went into Ric’s brain affected him this much? Or is there a new Nightwing out there?
Co-writers Scott Lobdell and Fabian Nicieza do something I didn’t think was possible. They made me feel like the last 25 years of comics never happened and we are back to the early 1990’s. The story had that feel of the strangeness of the 90’s. It actually makes sense because both of these writers were big around then.
This guy in the Nightwing costume is a bit of a nut. He carried a gun and he handcuffs Ric to a car for mouthing off.
Ric escapes and he follows this Nightwing fellow to a criminal act happening. Nightwing gets overwhelmed and Ric goes in to help him. It’s pretty predictable, but it’s somewhat a bit of guilty fun.
Ric spends the rest of the issue trying to figure out what is going on. Who is this “Nightwing” guy? Is he okay? Is Ric just going nuts? Hey, anything is possible in this story.
At the end the Scarecrow shows up which means there is more craziness next issue. The writers go big with this story. It’s definitely better than their previous collaborations in the past issues. You do really need to shut your brain off if you’re going to read this.
The art is the best part. Moore and Zircher do a solid job overall. This book does feel oft kilter these past few issues however. Hopefully somebody comes on and picks a better direction. It does feel like this book is lost at sea at the moment.
