‘Superman #5’ (review)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Illustrated by Ivan Reis
Published by DC Comics

This is part five of the storyline “The Unity Saga.” At the beginning of it, we get to see the Houses of El, Zod, and Kandor standing on a new land. Zod proclaims that this new place is called New Krypton!

Is this really happening? Can they all come together for that betterment of the free universe?

Well, it seems that the opening is a vision inside Zod‘s head.

From there we see Superman and Rogol Zaar having a brawl in the Phantom Zone. Can Superman survive this guy? It’s looking like Zaar may be getting the upper hand in this situation.

And Lex Luthor is there goading Zaar on and putting in his two cents.

Meanwhile, Adam Strange is trying to figure out how to get everyone out of the Phantom Zone. While he is there, Zod comes by. They have a scene together.

We see Ray Palmer trying to figure out how to get everyone out of this too above the Daily Planet. Everything is starting to look completely hopeless.

The pace at which Bendis writes this tale is awesome. There is never a wasted moment and you always know where everyone is and what they are doing. It’s commendable. He does a nice job of keeping the characters and characterizations consistent as well. You get to see new sides of these classic characters yet it all makes sense.

By the end, it looks like Zod will be fighting against Rogol Zaar next issue. I can’t wait to see how that goes. It should be a lot of fun.

The art by Reis is good as usual and he really know how to draw impactful scenes and make them work well. This is some great stuff. I’m happy in the direction it all seems to be going.

RATING: A
