Who would have thought that a Superman comic from Walmart would be this spectacular?
I give Tom King a lot of credit for pouring his heart into the story. Andy Kubert deserves equal credit for drawing one hell of a book as well! This is much better than I ever thought would be possible.
The issue begins on the world of Rann, which is Adam Strange’s adopted home.
I was unsure of how Superman got there as it’s quite a jump from where we left off last issue.
There is a beam called the “Zeta Beam” that can help Superman find and track down Alice, who was kidnapped from Earth. Superman seals himself into a chair and basically tells the guy he’s talking with to let him use the Zeta Beam. It’s a harrowing scene for sure.
Then, we are back on Earth.
We see Clark and Lois working together. In just one simple page, we see what a great handle King has on the pair. It isn’t long though before the adventure starts up again. And when it does, King really ratchets up the tension.
We see flashes of Superman’s battles. We we a child jumping off a rooftop. We see
Superman fighting against Doomsday and things from the past and possible things to come as well. It all leads to a heck of an ending and one hell of a cliffhanger.
I wish it was released all at once.
In just twelve pages, King and Kubert give us more than most comics these days do in an entire storyline. The story is tight and well written and the art is some of the best out there. This book is a surprisingly top shelf book that might end up being one of the best Superman stories ever.
