‘Nightwing #56’ (review)

Written by Scott Lobdell, Fabian Nicieza
Illustrated by Davide Gianfelice
Published by DC Comics

This book has been on a bit of the upswing as this issue begins. I am loving the fact that they have artist Davide Gianfelice on this title. I never would have thought to put him on this character but it works fairly well. I wish this writing were stronger but it’s not bad overall.

This issue opens up with The Scarecrow and his zombie squad wrecking havoc. They come up against the Nightwing Squad. Everyone is full of adrenaline and ready to attack each other.

And the battle just gets out of control.

While it’s raging on, Ric Grayson is trying to lay low. He goes about the city trying to avoid conflict as much as he can. He still is feeling the effects of being shot in the head.

Nicieza and Lobdell don’t really dig too much into the psychological aspects of this. They handle it in a “surface” way.

That’s not to say it’s terrible. I just wish that they took a chance and gave us what PTSD might look like on a superhero. I thought maybe in a few things that they were going to go in that direction but they never ended up there.

Eventually, one of the Nightwing Squad gets seriously hurt in the battle in front of Ric. This prompts Ric to jump back into battle! Needless to say, they all beat down the Scarecrow and his gang. It’s pretty predictable right up until the end. And that’s when a surprise hit that made me sit right on up!

The art is the best part of the book. The fight scenes are vivid and the quiet moments are well handled. I wish Gianfelice had a slightly better script. But the ending holds some promise. Let’s see there this story thread takes us.

RATING: B
