‘Sideways #12’ (review)

Written by Dan DiDio
Illustrated by Kenneth Rocafort
and Shane Davis
Published by DC Comics

Of all of the titles DC launched last year as part of their new initiative, the only title to really make any sort of impact is this title.

Sideways is a fun enough book to read month to month and it has some spiffy art. Dan DiDio has written a nice story that features many twists and turns.

This issue starts off with a major explosion having had gone off.

The Dark Stars Science Building seems to be under some sort of attack.

Sideways is on the scene and he’s trying to figure out what the hell is going on!

Then he comes across Leto.

Leto has a lot of stuff to talk to Derek about. She wants to open up a portal to the Dark Multiverse.

And how does she plan on doing that?

Well, she plans to harness Derek’s powers and use them to make that happen.

Apparently his powers are the key, and she finally has what she needs! Can Derek stop her? Or is he going to help her fulfill her ultimate deadly goals?

DiDio keeps the writing light but focused. When asked if teleporting is how he gets around, Derek replies “yep. It beats the traffic and saves on gas.” It’s little flourishes like this that really make the whole thing cook. I really enjoy his observations of the little moments.

Eventually, we see Derek coming up against Leto in a spectacular action scene. And then after that we get into a more quieter scene.

Derek somehow ends up in a strange place. And that strange place has something to do with his real birth mother. It’s quite a shocking cliffhanger and I love where we ended up.

The artwork is the icing on the cake. Kenneth Rocafort and Shane Davis are two of my favorite artists out there. Their work here is wonderful. Sideways is a great little book with a lot of strong talent. I love what happens in this month to month.

RATING: B+
