‘Suicide Squad #50’ (review)

Written by Rob Williams
Illustrated by German Peralta
and Brent Shoonover

Published by DC Comics

All crazy things must come to an end. That’s the case with this run of this particular Suicide Squad series. It’s been a nutty and sometimes strange ride on this title. But here we are at the end.

Writer Rob Williams leaves the same way he came in. That’s right. You guessed it. He leaves on a totally insane, yet kind of fun note.

We start off this last issue in Siberia.

The Suicide Squad are fighting against a bunch of villains to stop a global pandemic from happening.

It’s just basically one big fight scene. Williams peppers the script with such groaners as “Hands off the Flag!” In reference to someone holding Rick Flag.

Everyone is fighting everyone. But what the hell, why not? I just went with it.

The Suicide Squad fight to the bitter end trying to save the world. The script is a bit bad and the art is all over the place. Yet, somehow I was compelled to see how Williams was going to end this book. It’s pretty much insanity from the very beginning and hardly lets up.

Yet, in the middle of all of this insanity, there is a nice moment that happens.

There comes a moment where the Suicide Squad realizes that to save the world, they may have to die. They all look at each other. Then Deadshot tells everyone how The Wild Bunch is his favorite movie. He references that it may be time to go out like they did in the film. It’s a nice moment that is very well handled.

This leads to a violent conclusion which actually takes away the power of that scene a bit, just by the way it ends. The final few pages are very simple but not terribly impactful. It’s almost like the whole series goes out in a whimper.

So that is it for this title! It was a crazy, bizarre run that was fun for the most part, but never reached the heights of previous Suicide Squad series. Maybe the next iteration will be better.

RATING: B-
