Writer Warren Ellis has structured this reimagining of the Wildstorm Universe as a 24 issues series. As such, we are nearing the finale.
This issue nails that point home and you can really feel things being set up for that ending! It’s a very exciting read with a lot of surprises in store for readers!
The issue starts off with Jenny Sparks talking about the places that she’s been over the years. Since Jenny lives longer than most, these events occur over the span of a long time.
That’s pretty much the framework for the first half of the issue. We get to see Jenny in space with a mission that is relevant to the current storyline.
She recounts her story and it shows why she needed to form a team to stop the past events. It turns out she has a plan to save the world and do something similar in present times. We see that she even has a plan.
The problem is that some of the other old Wildstorm characters have plans as well. One of the plans has to do with wiping out 90 percent of the Earth’s population!
You heard me right! 90 percent! Jenny knows that they must be stopped.
So we get to see her formulate what she wants to accomplish. Ellis keeps things at a slow boil throughout most of the issue. It’s a bunch of set up for sure. But man, it’s interesting set up. There are a lot of forces in play and a lot of ball to juggle. Yet, it’s never overwhelming and the reader always knows where they are.
And what more can I say about the art of Jon Davis-Hunt. He’s one of the best artists and storytellers in the business. Each scene is precise like a Swiss watch in both pacing and character. A simple dialogue scene is interesting to look at because his work is so damn good.
We only have five issues left after this one. It’s been a hell of a ride and this is a fine chapter of the book indeed. The last panel is a quiet one but is also one hell of a cliffhanger. I’m sure this is going to end spectacularly.
