I love what Brian Michael Bendis has done with the Superman line of books. He’s created something amazing.
Both books in the line are very well handled. I do enjoy Action Comics a bit more.
With the title, we get to see Bendis teamed up with some interesting artists in the business. After Ryan Sook last issue, this month has one of my favorite artists in the business, Mr. Steve Epting!
From the cover, this looks like it’s the start of the upcoming announced event called Leviathan!
What is Leviathan? I have no idea but I’m excited about it!
The opening sequence has Jimmy Olsen on a motorcycle with Ella. They are going somewhere special for that evening! They end up in what seems to be a Kobra rally! This is one hell of a night out for Jimmy!
Ella reveals her true colors! Apparently, she is a supporter of the Kobra gang! This doesn’t please Jimmy too much. He makes a run for it!
It’s a scene filled with crazy adrenaline and Epting does a great job with the drawing and pacing of it. It’s a great introduction to the story. The building that the rally was in just blows up. But not before we see Jimmy snap off a picture. It’s a beautiful opener and from there we follow Jimmy to The Daily Planet.
He is awoken by Perry White. He meets up with Clark Kent. They talk about the night before. That leads to a funny line where Jimmy admits that he “kissed a lizard person.” It’s cool moments like this that really make the story something that is truly unique.
We then see a heartbreaking scene where Lois meets and talks with her father. They talk and in the course of their discussion, Lois tells her father how she is in love with Superman. Her father does not approve. It’s a brutal scene to read but Bendis keeps it honest and in doing so also makes it feel real.
Superman is then flying over Atlanta! He performs a rescue of a falling woman! It turns out to be Amanda Waller! He rescues her and then he turns to face the foe responsible. It’s not what Superman or the reader might be excepting however. And that’s part of the fun.
Bendis and Epting are a formidable team for sure! The story and art are both great and this is a nice story that they are collaborating on. I can’t wait to see there they take us next!
