Supergirl’s adventures in space continue here!
I really like what Marc Andreyko has been doing in this book. He makes Supergirl a hero who can hold her own against the big guns in the DC Universe. Andreyko just puts incredible obstacles in her way and he lets Kara overcome them in amazing ways.
Kara has found herself in the middle of a Vega System civil war!
And that’s not all that is bad in her life. She is also powerless at this time.
Andreyko ups the stakes here. While powerless, Kara proves to be the hero yet again. She goes around and tries to save as many lives as she can of the slaves that are on the planet.
By showing her being selfless, Andreyko makes Kara’s characterization stronger. It’s a delight to read.
Kara also has the Omega Men to contend with. Apparently three of their members that they thought were dead are still alive! The three (who are Nimbus, Harpis and Demonia) seem to be back mysteriously out of nowhere. The Omega Men are happy, but there seems to be more going on than they think.
The fight scenes are especially good. My favorite scene has to do with Krypto the Superdog. He joins the fight and it’s really funny and sweet moment. The book does eventually get a little muddled. By the end, Supergirl undergoes a weird transformation and I have to be honest, I wasn’t very fond of it. It was a bit of a reach and it turned out worse than I thought.
So the story got a little strange. Then there’s the art. It hasn’t been consistent issue to issue. Pansica isn’t bad, but the previous issues had Kevin Maguire and they aren’t in the same ballpark as far as the look goes. It made it muddled more than it should be.
There’s a lot of good happening here. It just got derailed during the latter half of the book. Maybe the next issue will remedy that.
One can only hope.
