This book is another great read in a consistently great series.
Warren Ellis and Jon Davis-Hunt are a dream team and I can’t believe how good this has been. They have really maintained a high quality on this book and I can’t get enough. I’m only sad it’s going to be twenty four issues and we are nearing the end.
There is a meeting in Skywatch that starts off our issue here. They talk strategy and about an upcoming attack. It’s all very technical and very cold. And it’s perfect for the kind of story Ellis is telling. By making it very clinical, it makes the rest of the issue that much more powerful. And what follows, you ask?
All out chaos, that’s what!
Ivana Baiul and Jackie King are being marked for their “retirement plans.”
That means death!
Skywatch tracks them down to a farm. The strike team goes into formation in a silent scene. But just when they are ready to strike, Baiul and King retaliate!
And then we see destruction and violence on a very large scale!
And it’s literally the entire issue!
This issue belongs to artist Jon Davis-Hunt and he just owns it. His panel layout is amazing. The way he paces and stages everything is off the charts fantastic. Ellis lets his co-creator of this issue have the wheel and it’s one explosive event.
There’s not much in the way of exposition beyond that opening scene. We do get to see the Weatherman barking orders a bit amidst the destruction up in the Skywatch Tower above the Earth. But beyond that? It’s a glorious ballet of destruction and death.
The last line is a little girl asking in a colorful way just what happened. I laughed out loud at that line. It was wonderful. The whole issue was. We only have four more issues after this. I’m sad that is the case. But I’m going to enjoy the hell out of what is remaining.
