‘Batman Beyond #30’ (review)

Written by Dan Jurgens
Illustrated by Evan “Doc” Shaner
Published by DC Comics

The most recent storyline here was just out of this world awesome. Jurgens is teaming up with some amazing artists on this book. This time, he is collaborating with Evan Shaner. He also takes the series to new places that we haven’t seen for this character. It’s very engrossing for the most part.

This issue opens with the aftermath of the Joker storyline. We see Terry having a haunting nightmare of the Joker ready to kill the future Robin and him. He wakes up screaming.

From there, we see a downright macabre scene.

Terry, Bruce and the gang are standing by the Joker’s body. Barbara tells them that this is definitely the Joker that they all know and hate and that he is definitely dead.

The Joker died of a heart attack. They all have a tough time believing that. But that seems to be the case here.

The Jokerz gang has even seemingly dispersed too. Could this be the start of something new?  Terry and the future Robin start cleaning up the streets. They have a heartfelt talk and it wraps up their part in this storyline.

Then, the Joker’s body disappears. Who has taken it?

It a brief, but obvious, epilogue that could have been more creative. Instead, it’s a tad dumbed down and annoying.

But that’s only because the rest of the book isn’t. This is some great stuff overall. Besides a lackluster ending, it’s a nice coda to the recent story arc. Let’s see where we get off to next!

RATING: B
