‘Cover #6’ (review)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Illustrated by David Mack
Published by DC Comics

This comic book series was a great treat. We got to see two top notch creators come together and the results have been excellent. The concept was an intriguing one that the two used to its fullest possible potential. How did the end of this series fare?

Well, it’s pretty damn awesome.

The first few pages have some inspired layouts. Mack really goes the extra mile here and shows us through illustration just what is going on in the main character’s mind. We get to see what Max is feeling through images and some words and it’s a brand new experience(or at the very least it feels like one) It’s a great thing to see a creative team that tries out new things in comics.

From there we get to see Max attend a comic industry dinner in Brazil. Mack switches the art style to be a bit more traditional here and it’s wonderful. We get to see the various comic personalities interact and Bendis keeps the dialogue lively and fun.

We also get to play the guessing game of “who’s who” wondering who the creative team based the various characters on. They make it enjoyable without being pretentious which is a good thing.

Max leaves the dinner. That’s when the intrigue begins. He knows he is being followed. But by who? He also spends the rest of the issue trying to come to terms with being both a spy working for the United States government and being a comic book artist. It all leads into the very end of the book.

So, the end of the book falls a bit flat for me. The problem is that the book will have a second series next year. And it feels a bit angled towards that in a manipulative way. With that, we are left with what feels like a lot of set up with not a lot actually resolved. And that’s okay to do , but it’s becoming a trend in all of the books Bendis is writing lately.

Still, it’s a decent enough book. I’ll be reading it when it comes back for sure and it does feature some of the most excellent artwork on the stands. Bendis and Mack are a dream team, and hopefully this book comes back sooner rather than later. It’s extremely well done.

RATING: A-
