In advance of this weekend’s upcoming C2E2, Dynamite Entertainment have announced several new projects, among them new licensed projects featuring the Sweet Valley High and Altered Carbon properties, a new series of cosplay trading cards and a new mini-series focusing on that she-devil with a sword, Red Sonja!
Martian vs. Martian in Warlord of Mars Attacks!
From Jeff Parker & Dean Kotz in June
Dynamite announces a “fun” and crazy new crossover for June, Warlord of Mars Attacks.
Just when people thought Dynamite could not think of more fun crossovers! Warlord of Mars Attacks takes everything to a new level of unexpected meta crossovers!
Who can best defend against a Martian invasion? A fearless human hero adopted by the red planet, the one and only John Carter! After a lander disturbs the Martian surface, everyone’s favorite big-headed sadistic aliens lead a brutal invasion force toward Earth. Meanwhile on Earth, a man from 1868 Virgina comes out of stasis.
Writer Jeff Parker (Batman ’66, James Bond Origin, Future Quest) is joined by artist Dean Kotz (Dungeons & Dragons, Krampus). While Omi Remalante Jr. (Red Sonja, Agent 47: Hitman) and Hassan Ostmane-Elhaou (Red Sonja, Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt) provide colors and letters, respectively.
Spectacular covers will be available by Dave Johnson (Batman, Deadpool, 100 Bullets), Marco D’Alfonso (I Am Groot, Vision), Ramon Villalobos (America, Nighthawk) and retro trading card inspired ones by Ben Caldwell (Red Sonja, Wonder Woman, Prez).
Dynamite is the home for epic crossovers, treating fans to multiverse spanning epics including Swords of Sorrow and Prophecy. John’s darling Dejah Thoris has teamed up with both Vampirella and Barbarella! The crew of Battlestar Galactica met…the crew of Battlestar Galactica. Coincidental lookalikes Ash Williams and Elvis Presley teamed up in Army of Darkness/Bubba Ho-Tep. AND Red Sonja & Vampirella are on their way to Riverdale. Plus so many more! If readers liked those, they will love Warlord of Mars Attacks!
“John Carter meeting the Mars Attacks! Martians may sound insane, but I assure you it works, because Dean Kotz is drawing the hell out of it. It’s easily the most bizarre sci-fi concept I’ve been able to do yet, and the wildest mashup yet,” said writer Jeff Parker. “And if you’re a Burroughs fan, you’ll appreciate some deep cuts that we put in.”
Artist Dean Kotz shared, “Working on my favorite Burroughs character with Jeff and Nate is a dream come true. Jeff seamlessly drops the original sci-fi swashbuckler smack dab in the middle of a retro alien invasion that spans two planets and hundreds of years. The blockbuster-scale story features so many interesting locales and characters. I never know what Jeff’s gonna throw at me next. And, thanks to those nasty Mars Attack! invaders, I get to draw A LOT of fun property damage.”
Meanwhile, editor Nate Cosby has his own fantastical origin story for this series. “True story, Jeff, Dean, Omi & Hassan came to my house and tied me up and said if I don’t let them make a comic where John Carter beats the holy hell out of the green dudes from Mars Attacks, they were gonna keep me tied up and kick my shins and not let me have cereal. I love cereal, and I don’t like my shins kicked, so I said OK. They let me go, and the comic is fever-dreamingly awesome. So everything worked out in the end.”
Warlord of Mars Attacks #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ April 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in June 2019.
Red Sonja’s Early Years Depicted in New Series!
Luke Lieberman Returns to the Character in June!
Dynamite invites fans to witness a young, raw and reckless adventurer
in Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil this June!
Writer Luke Lieberman (Red Sonja: Doom of the Gods), artist and fellow Sonja all-star Sergio Davila (Conan, Project Superpowers) and colorist Ulises Arreola (Superman, Batgirl) have come together for an early tale of everyone’s favorite fiery-haired heroine. This limited series will feature Red Sonja’s trademark armor – and her temper. Not yet the legend she will become, but building a fearsome reputation!
Sonja finds herself against the demon conqueror Raka, whose alchemy turns men into thralls. Luckily her mentor Ozzyus is still kicking at this point. He was last seen toward the beginning of Dynamite’s contributions to the Red Sonja mythos in the previous series by Lieberman and Peter David’s Red Sonja vs. Thulsa Doom.
Discussing where Red Sonja is at the start of this story, writer Luke Lieberman said, “This story is about her figuring out what kind of woman she wants to be, what she wants to do with her gift of violence. Sonja is a total badass, but what makes her so compelling and iconic is her humanity. She sees the world for what it is and she is who she is unapologetically. She has already taken the worst Hyboria can dish out, so there is nothing left to fear. Despite this hardness, or perhaps because of it, she recognizes innocence as rare and precious and she will protect it.”
Readers can pick from three unique covers on each issue. Master painter Lucio Parrillo (Vampirella, Queen Sonja) delivers jaw dropping pieces. For a more old school option, interior artist Sergio Davila is drawing covers as well. Rounding out the selection is a set of cosplay photos starring fan favorite Shannon Kingston. Or collect them all of course!
“Red Sonja represents using the adversity we have in our lives and using it as the fire that burns in our bellies to fuel us to victory, whatever that means to us,” said cosplayer Shannon Kingston. “It’s not just dress up, it’s channeling the soul of the character.”
“Luke and Sergio make a killer combo, telling a dark, thrilling, and action-packed early Red Sonja adventure,” said Joe Rybandt, Dynamite Executive Editor.
Sonja’s “modern day Hyborian set” heroics can be followed in the flagship Red Sonja by Eisner-nominated writer Mark Russell (Flintstones, Second Coming, Wonder Twins) and swords and sorcery-honed artist Mirko Colak (Conan). Also coming soon is Red Sonja & Vampirella Meet Betty & Veronica written by celebrated former Red Sonja writer Amy Chu (Poison Ivy) and Maria Laura Sanapo (DC Comics Bombshells, Charmed).
Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ April 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in June 2019.
Dynamite Publishes First Ever Sweet Valley High OGN!
Francine Pascal’s Elizabeth and Jessica Return In New Stories in May!
Dynamite is honored to publish the first ever Sweet Valley High original graphic novel in Francine Pascal’s juggernaut all-ages soap opera franchise.
“Academic All-Star?” reinvents the nostalgic saga of the Wakefield twins for a new era of readers, while paying tribute to the originals that captivated so many. Rising star writer Katy Rex (Charmed Magic School, Jade Protection Services) enrolls in Sweet Valley with artist Devaki Neogi (The Skeptics, Curb Stomp) and colorist Pippa Mather (Charmed Magic School).
Sweet Valley High debuted in 1983 from writer Francine Pascal and evolved into an incomparable success. The core series of novels has 181 installments and counting spinoffs adds up to over 400 books – amounting to hundreds of millions of copies. Fans will also remember the TV show from the 1990s which ran for four seasons starring Brittany and Cynthia Daniel.
The usually impulsive and rash Jessica develops a crush on her new Shakespeare teacher, motivating her to model herself on her regimented and sincere sister Elizabeth. Will people start mixing the two girls up? Will Jess fall back on her ways only for Liz to straighten everything out?
For writer Katy Rex, Sweet Valley High is a lifelong love, “I have been an absolute bookworm my whole life and I transitioned from Sweet Valley Twins to Sweet Valley High, and in a lot of ways I grew up alongside Jessica and Elizabeth. They’re timeless characters, so much so that it’s practically intuitive to see how they would feel and act in any era. My lifelong experience with the books really allowed me to nail the voices and the feeling of the series. This is absolutely classic Sweet Valley and it’s equally absolutely 2019.”
“Sweet Valley High is a book I read as a teenager and to actually be on art duty in the translation to the graphic medium is a dream to me!,” said artist Devaki Neogi. “I have spent the large part of a year on this book and the entire team of Katy, Pippa, Cathy and Joe (Rybandt – editor) have been fantastic to work with.
“Sweet Valley High is such a prolific hallmark of young readers fiction and we are proud to be bringing it to graphic novels for the first time,” said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite Publisher/CEO. “Francine Pascal has been a joy to collaborate with and we’re lucky to have such a passionate writer like Katy. Sweet Valley Fans of all ages will love this book!”
Sweet Valley High: Academic All-Star? will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ March 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in May 2019.
Dynamite & Playboy Present Exclusive
Vampirella Story for Her 50th Anniversary!
Gail Simone Pens Story for Spring 2019 Free Speech Issue!
Dynamite announces an exclusive standalone Vampirella story published in Playboy‘s Spring 2019 Freedom of Speech issue available now.
The story is written by the legendary Gail Simone (Red Sonja, Wonder Woman, Domino) and drawn by the peerless Joyce Chin (Xena Warrior Princess, Wynonna Earp). Colorist Addison Duke (Barbarella/Dejah Thoris, Curse Words) and letterer Taylor Esposito (Batman, Aquaman, Elvira) round out the team on this six-page tale. The cover of Playboy was shot by photographer Kelia Anne MacCluskey.
Vampi protects a couple of professional cosplayers from crazed cannibal peers. Cosplay, cannibalism and no kink-shaming! Fans of the Daughter of Drakulon will not want to miss this story.
This is actually a reunion for Simone and Chin, fitting for Vampirella’s 50th anniversary banner year. The pair collaborated on the colossal crossover Witchblade/Magdalena/Vampirella published by Top Cow Productions in 2004.
“Vampirella is the original monster girl of comics. It’s always a joy to tell stories with her, looking good and being bad,” said writer Gail Simone. “There were two major enticements to do this story; one was to work with the wonderful Joyce again, who draws sexy evil like few can, and the other was to be part of that amazing legacy Playboy has had with comics and cartoons. The publisher was a known fan of the medium, wanted to BE a cartoonist at one time and provided a platform for the brilliant work of people like Harvey Kurtzman, Gahan Wilson and so many more. It’s fun to bring Vampirella into that mix!”
Artist Joyce Chin chimes in, “Vampi is a nostalgic 60’s hero for me, fun and campy. That great, classic Trina Robbins costume design, and the incredible art from people like José González, Frank Frazetta, Esteban Maroto, and so many more. There’s a lot to love there. That she was having her own adventures and kicking monster butts in an era when very few female characters were prominently doing so, meant a lot.”
“Vampirella is one of the most iconic characters in comics who has had some of the greatest creators in the industry work on her, from Trina Robbins and Frank Frazetta, to Mark Millar, Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis, Nancy Collins, James Robinson, Amanda Conner, Joe Jusko, Alex Ross, Joseph Michael Linsner, Louise Simonson, Archie Goodwin and so many more talented creators over her 50 year history,” said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. “We couldn’t be more excited that Playboy worked with us to create this 50th Anniversary story, and to bring in two of the strongest female voices in our industry today – Gail and Joyce.”
The issue of Playboy is available on newsstands and digitally on Playboy.com today. In addition, Vampirella #0 launches on the first Saturday in May for Free Comic Book Day. Dynamite has been publishing Vampirella stories since 2010 and has reprinted classic material from previous eras. Along the way some of the biggest writers and artists in the industry have contributed, including J. Scott Campbell, Alex Ross, Joe Jusko, Terry Dodson, Joseph Michael Linsner, Paul Cornell, Jeremy Whitley, Dan Brereton, Nancy A. Collins, and more.
Altered Carbon Original Graphic Novel Comes This May
Richard K. Morgan Expands His Cyberpunk Classic
Dynamite announces Altered Carbon: Download Blues, an Original Graphic Novel written by Richard K. Morgan in his acclaimed New York Times bestselling science fiction saga.
Morgan is joined by co-writer Rik Hoskin (White Sand, Red Rising) and artist Ferran Sellares (Grimm Fairy Tales) for the first ever graphic novel entry in Altered Carbon and the first major new story in over a decade.
In the world of Altered Carbon, technology has advanced to allow human consciousness to be stored digitally. Following death or for other reasons, people can be transferred into new bodies, nicknamed “sleeves.” This has drastically overhauled the criminal justice system, as well as unlocking interstellar travel. Series protagonist Takeshi Kovacs is a former soldier turned PI, plenty experienced with sleeves himself.
The original Altered Carbon novel was released in 2002 and exploded Morgan’s career with near universally positive critical reception, including winning the prestigious Philip K. Dick Award. Science fiction fans ate up the hard boiled story of Takeshi Kovacs and the New York Times Bestseller continues to fly off shelves. Two sequel novels followed, Broken Angels and Woken Furies. In 2018 the novel was adapted for a Netflix TV series of the same name starring Joel Kinnaman. A second season will release, with Anthony Mackie taking on the Kovacs role as a new sleeve.
Morgan has experience already in the comics medium, having written two Black Widow series. He was the lead writer on the hit EA video game Crysis 2 and wrote the tie-in comic series.
“When you go to Dynamite for a sequential art incarnation of your much loved anti-hero, you know you’re not going to get short-changed. These, after all, are the guys who took on The Boys without blinking. No compromise, no punches pulled,” said Richard K. Morgan. “I couldn’t wish for a happier, more hard-boiled home in which to have Takeshi Kovacs make his comic book debut.”
“What a wonderful extension of this incredible world and what a delight to have the creator of Kovacs himself – Richard Morgan – overseeing the entirety of our first graphic novel. Rik and Ferran have done a masterful job bringing the pages to life and pushing Kovacs into a bold new direction,” said Executive Editor Joseph Rybandt.
“The mythos Richard K. Morgan has created is so rich, it’s easy to see why the novels are so successful and how it has become a huge hit on Netflix. We’re honored that Richard is allowing us to work with him to create new stories to continue to grow this universe.Dynamite has experienced great success with retailers and fans creating original stories of popular prose series in the graphic novel format, striving to offer something wholly original for hardcore fans,” said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite Publisher/CEO. “Altered Carbon is one of the true masterpieces of sci-fi and we can’t wait for fans to check out this story!”
Altered Carbon: Download Blues will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ March 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in May 2019.
