‘Naomi #3’ (review)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
and David F. Walker
Illustrated by Jamal Campbell
Published by DC Comics

This started off being a nice and interesting title. It sort of sprung up out of nowhere and it had a decent first two issues. Writers Bendis and Walker have set up a nice and intriguing mystery that I was digging. There were a lot of possibilities from the get go. This issue gives us a bunch in the way of revelations.

And I’m sort of torn over my feelings about it all.

Naomi confronts Dee the Mechanic about his relationship as to what he means to her. He says that there is no real connection. But is he lying? He’s not very forthcoming with answers at first.

That is, until Naomi shows him a picture of her mother. She starts asking him some really hard questions. Then, Dee starts to really  break down. Is he ready to spill the beans about her life?

The conversation does not go the way Naomi wants it to. Something is up, and she can sense it.

Then, she asks the one question which sends the whole series into a spin. Naomi asks Dee if he is human.

And then we get the revelation of where he is from.

It got a bit silly quick quite honestly and it took me right out of the book. It was just so over the top I started laughing a little bit. It took two and a half issues of solid world building and it felt like they just threw it all out the window. Maybe future issues will prove me wrong but we will see.

Naomi is rescued by this point in a suddenly convenient plot device. She then gets taken home by her parents. On the way home she tells them about what she has witnessed. And then they provide us with another revelation that seems rather trite. But we shall see.

I think also that maybe the writers went a little too quickly with the revelations. And because of that, it brought my interest down. That being said, there are some things to really talk about here. In particular, the art.

Jamal Campbell is a the star here, and the art is worth more than the price of admission. He’s going to have a hell of a future in comics. It’s amazing. Hopefully they can get the story on track. It just feels like they may have gone off the rails a bit here, more than was necessary.
