‘Superman #9’ (review)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Illustrated by Ivan Reis
and Brandon Peterson

Published by DC Comics

So Brian Michael Bendis has decided to bring the Crime Syndicate into his present Superman story.

I have been enjoying this book for the most part but this decision is currently giving me a headache. Bendis has been throwing as many DC characters into his books as he possibly can. He’s getting out of control!

This issue begins with what seems to be a great big gathering of peace.

It is World Peace Day after all so why not! Superman and a bunch of heroes are all together!

Amongst all of this, Jon and Superman have a discussion.

They talk about where Jon has been. And they talk about Jon’s encounter with the Crime Syndicate.

From there we get to see Jon fight against the Syndicate themselves. And that crew does not like to lose. This encounter as drawn by superstar Brandon Peterson is absolutely gorgeous to look at and absolutely horrifying. Peterson’s art really shows these characters at their worst. We get to see Jon take a one hell of a beating at their hands.

Jon seemingly is taught a strange lesson by the “Superman” of the group. Then, we get to see Jon on the run from them. Eventually, this leads him to be tracked down by Superwoman of the Crime Syndicate. She is ready to end his life and this is where Bendis ends the issue. It is on a high note.

I am tiring a bit of his compressed storytelling style, however. It feels like it takes a year for one little thing to happen.

Hopefully he picks up the pace a bit. He works with some really amazing artists but  it can be better. Right now I’m losing a bit of interest.

RATING: B+
