This comic book is a wonderful offspring of the older Neil Gaiman series.
Writer Simon Spurrier is the first writer post-Gaiman to really do an amazing job writing in this universe. It’s also got some amazing art to boot and takes all the familiar elements and makes something that feel completely new.
It’s beautiful to see.
Dream has abandoned his realm. And it’s up to the other denizens of the land to keep it together. Up until now they have been having a hard time doing so.
This issue focuses on Rose and her relationship with The Dreaming.
We start off the issue in a hospital in Sussex, England. Rose is visiting her sick mother who is finally getting some sleep. She talks with a nurse and then the nurse gets on her way. Rose then is alone with her mother. She concentrates. And then Rose slips into The Dreaming.
She immediately sees Daniel who warns her off. He tells her that he has her mother now and to go away. But Rose isn’t having it. She decides to stay and confront Daniel and to get her mother back. We then cut back to the room.Rose is getting through to her mother. It’s working. Rose then decides to tell her mother about her “weird few weeks.”
That story of Rose’s past weeks take up most of the rest of the issue.
We see a romantic scene between her and Daniel. The title of the story is “Love.” And it’s really about heartbreak. The end of the issue is totally heartbreaking and it’s only part one of the story! I can only imagine where Spurrier takes us from here!
Abigail Larson fills in here on the art duties and does a more than capable job drawing this issue. It’s gorgeous to look at and she keeps the standards set by Bilquis Evely as the artist high. This is a fine issue and worth reading. They’re really doing a great job.
