Hands down, this is my favorite new comic book of the year thus far.
Mark Russell is writing some of the best stories in all of comic books. This is the comic book that he is currently making the biggest impression with his talent on. The book is fast, fun, and full of emotions. I loved the first issue and this one follows that one up perfectly.
This issue starts us off at the Lexicon Private Prison. We get to see a man called the Scrambler being held in a jail cell. A guard comes over. Apparently, the Scrambler switches his mind out with the guard and escapes the prison in the guard’s body.
This is a fun set-up for the issue and really gets things off the ground fast and furious!
From there, we see Jayna and and Zan on a field trip. They were supposed to go to the Planetarium but unfortunately there were budget cuts.
So guess where they get to go? You guessed it! The Lexicon Private Prison!
This leads to a funny scene where the Wonder Twins get thrown out. Russell also gives Zan the line “You’re the only person I know who can get kicked out of a prison, Jayna!” I laughed out loud with that line for sure.
From there, we get to see a really funny scene with Beast Boy doing a commercial for Fruity Pies. Zan and Jayna talk with him for a bit and then they come across the vampiric menace of Drunkula, a villain from the League of Annoyance!
It just gets weirder and weirder as the issue goes on but you can’t help yourself from loving it!
We also get an introduction to Gleek. Gleek has an enjoyable introduction and the whole thing just works. Russell really does an exemplary job writing the script. You can’t help yourself from smiling.
And Stephen Byrne is a marvel. He is so damn good at drawing facial expressions and physicality that I just love it. This is a great example of how all comic books should be done. It’s quite excellent and keeps you interested and entertained throughout!
