Tom King finishes up his “Knightmares” storyline here with this issue. It’s a pretty damn cool ending too. To make this happen, King has teamed up with a few different artists. Amanda Connor handles the art duties in the beginning of this issue and does a really great job.
The story has a few twists and turns as well! Connor’s cartoony style is a welcome breath of fresh air as we see from the very first panels. We get to see Lois Lane and Selina Kyle walking up to the new Fortress of Solitude.
Supergirl is there too and she has apparently brought them both there for some reason. Supergirl has to then go to stop and asteroid heading for Earth.
This leaves Lois and Selina standing there. They are both there to do something that isn’t quite explained at first. The twist is that they are both drunk. This hilarious opening to the issue is great and really demonstrates King’s ability to pretty much write in any style. I laughed out loud for this scene.
The next scene is Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent having dinner at Wayne Manor. The conversation is strained and awkward but King really does make this scene incredibly entertaining. Clark has to run off as he says that there is an asteroid heading for earth and that he has to stop it.
There is another hilarious scene that where Lois and Selina convince the Superman robots in the fortress to give them more alcohol. It has to be read to be believed but it’s a riot. By this point I had no idea where this story was going but I couldn’t keep my eyes off of it.
The rest of the issue continues along like this. We get to see Selina and Lois going around the Fortress causing a ton of mischief. (The scene where they try on Superman’s costumes is a scream). We get to see Clark and Bruce talk. This is when we learn that this is actually a nightmare for Bruce. And it’s that revelation that sets in motion the end of this storyline.
The last page is a stunner. It’s so well done because it’s so simple but makes so much sense. King takes a chance on that last page and it’s unbelievable. I can’t wait to see where he takes us from here. It’s an incredible ending to a unique and compelling storyline and is a nice bridge to the next one coming up.
