Would someone please make this a regular series already? I love that this limited series is out there, but I just want more of it. Well, make it a regular series only if Mark Russell is writing it. He’s great and makes everything he does something really special. This is definitely in that category.
The opening scene is the book has the school science fair!
Jayna is showing off her science project. Jayna made a solar flashlight which one of the teachers instantly asks “why would you need a flashlight in daylight?”
We then see her classmate Polly’s science project about the internet being sentient. You just know that this science project will somehow play into the narrative eventually.
We then see Zan with Gleek almost hitting on a fellow student. Similar to this, Jayna gets hit on by a fellow student.
It suddenly looks like the Twins have actual dates! Meanwhile, Polly Math’s thoughts are running wild. Just what is she thinking about? And is it going to turn into a threat to the Twins?
I give Russell a lot of credit for capturing the awkwardness of a first date here and discussing sexuality. The two dates happen. Jayna goes to dinner. Zan goes to a violent movie. It’s funny and sweet and extremely well handled for both of the awkward dates.
Eventually, some misadventure comes both of their ways on their respective dates. It gets silly and out of hand and is completely wonderful. Russell keeps things light but pointed and, as always, very timely and relevant as well.
The art by Byrne is tops. He really nails each and every scene perfectly. I love his art more and more with each issue. This is something special indeed. I’m sad there are only two more issues after this. It’s a real shame, in fact.
