Cecil Castellucci is writing Batgirl?
I’m in!
As soon as I opened up this new issue and saw that I became really excited. Cecil Castellucci is one of my favorite writers in comics and anything she touches is pure gold.
This is no exception. As soon as I read the first few pages, I knew that I was in for something special.
The opening scene has The Terrible Trio from there previous issue forming a scheme. It was a fairly entertaining scene, too. I love these villains very much and Castellucci picks up exactly where Mairghread Scott left off with them. She has a pretty good handle on them as well, so the characterizations are pretty consistent and fun.
Together they activate a being. More on that to come.
From there, we get to see Batgirl fighting Killer Moth. It’s a cool scene for sure. She has a big fight with the Moth that is beautifully illustrated and paced. Batgirl cant stop Killer Moth so he gets away.
And that’s when the story really kicks into high gear.
We get to see Barbara in her civilian identity, trying to get things done. It’s a different look for her and I quite liked it. There’s very little downtime but the creative team really do make the most of what is there.
It’s pretty awesome.
While this is going on, the being from the beginning keeps asking “what’s my name?”
We find out at the end of the issue. And it’s one hell of a revelation.
The future of this comic looks to be bright and it all starts here.
The new creative team make quite the impression from the get go. I couldn’t tell you where they are planning to take us from here. I only know that I can’t wait to see. This is pretty much a big leap in quality.
And it can only get better from here. I’m very excited to watch where this one might be going.
