‘Captain Ginger: Vol. 1’ TPB (review)

Written by Stuart Moore
Illustrated by June Brigman
Published by Ahoy Comics

I should start off this review by saying that I took one look at the cover of this book and thought “this is not a comic book for me.” First off, it had cats running a spaceship. Their leader is Captain Ginger. I mean, this is definitely something I wouldn’t think to pick up.

But then I saw it was written by Stuart Moore, who is always reliable. And then, it’s drawn by June Brigman. I love her art and at that point, I was in.

So I gave it a fair shake. It’s instantly overwhelming. And you know what? That’s okay. It’s a lot to swallow but the creative team make it fun while you’re doing so.

The premise is that the human race has died out. So a bunch of cats head aboard a starship and travel in space. They have been out there for 18 months.

Captain Ginger isn’t just the captain of this ship. He is also the cat who handles all of the problems of his fellow cats.

He is the cat responsible to lead the charge against the villainous creatures known as The Lumen. There’s a lot of good banter between the characters. But I have to be honest, I had to read this in a few sittings. There are so many jokes and gags that it’s actually exhausting. The characters are all well developed and intriguing however. This may actually be the ultimate cat comic.

There is also a very high resemblance too to some sci-fi classics. Smart readers will pick up the references. They are not necessary to enjoy the comic. But it does add an extra layer of enjoyment for those who notice it.

The art by Brigman is great, of course. I’m not sure this can last beyond this volume but we will see. Again, I’m not a fan of this type of comic book but there is a lot to like, and the strong creative team kept me reading until the very end.

RATING: B+
