‘Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #1’ (review)

Written by Matt Fraction
Art by Steve Lieber
Published by DC Comics

Well, this was a nice surprise.

I’m not sure how many people were out there begging for a Jimmy Olsen series but that’s what they gave us.

Luckily, they also gave us two top notch creators to work on it. Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber do a fine job here and this is something really special indeed. I’m excited to see where it goes from this point on.

The opening sequence or “short story” in this book gives a little depth to the Olsen family name. We get to see Joachim Olsen in an adventure that ends rather tragically. We see him almost act the way Jimmy would act in the same situation.

Fraction begins the book smartly, and the fun continues throughout.

Every few pages there is a new story, sort of what it was like reading a Jimmy Olsen comic book from the 1950s. The best of the bunch is the story where Jimmy Olsen goes into a rocketship. He somehow gets turned into a big turtle and rockets towards the Earth. Superman appears and saves him but not before he causes a bunch of destruction. I laughed my butt off at this story. It’s well done and pretty hilarious to boot.

There is a decent story where Jimmy  Olsen works with Perry White. It’s great to see how the two of them interact and work with each other in this story. The last story is the most intriguing. Jimmy moves into a new place. He has some tough times in his new apartment.

But then he puts up a newspaper clipping. It says that Jimmy Olsen was murdered. This is the cliffhanger of the issue.

It’s a fun issue overall! Fraction has a great handle on the character and it shows. Likewise, Lieber is an artist who doesn’t get enough attention. Together, the two of them do an amazing job of bringing this book to life. I look forward to see what adventures they have in store for us.

RATING: A-
