The first issue of this series was like a shot of adrenaline in the arm. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have put everything that they can possibly put into a Batman comic into this book and their mutual passion shows. This book is well written and well drawn and it does showcase these two creators at the top of their comic book game!
So we found out in the last issue that the apocalypse has indeed happened. The world is in chaos!
Batman is going across the land with the severed head of the Joker to try to find the person responsible. It’s a bunch of wacky fun watching Batman verbally spar with that Joker as they travel across this crazy landscape.
My favorite moment came when there is a crazy storm that occurs. Batman is just trying to get by.
There is a weird tornado that happens. During it, the Joker asks Batman if he can be Robin now. It’s dark and and macabre and I am just loving every panel of this.
So Batman and the Joker head travel across the land. They encounter a bunch of DC characters such as the Unknown Soldier and even Swamp Thing.
We even get a glimpse of the Scarecrow and Bane. Those two working together has got to be one of the most horrifying things I have seen. Capullo’s drawings of the pair made me a little sick and I totally mean that as a compliment. It’s pretty great.
Alfred plays a part in all of this too. It’s pretty gruesome but it totally makes sense. The creative team really pack a lot of story into this book. Batman then travels to the “Plains of Solitude.” While he is there, he finds himself in the company of one of his old friends. And let me just say, that it is completely awesome.
The whole book is like that: Completely awesome. Snyder is at the top of this game writing this and Capullo is right along side him. Both of these creators are doing the work of their careers. This is such a well developed story. I am sad it is only three issues, but I am happy that it’s coming out. This is tops.
