‘Black Adam: Year Of The Villain #1’ (review)

Written by Paul Jenkins
Art by Inaki Miranda
Published by DC Comics

Black Adam has always been a kind of fan favorite character.

So it makes total sense that with this Year of the Villain crossover that he would get this issue here.

And man, he has a pretty damn good creative team working on him.

Paul Jenkins is a damn fine writer and Inaki Miranda is a damn fine artist! I was intrigued from the get go and I wasn’t disappointed in the least! This is a fine one shot story!

The issue begins with Black Adam laying in defeat at the hands of the Shazam That Laughs!

It is a stunning image to begin the book with.

From there, we flash back to a day earlier with Black Adam talking with some people in his kingdom that he has created. He is in agreement with Lex Luthor it seems and agrees that something has to change.

That is when the Shazam That Laughs shows up in Black Adam’s kingdom. This scene is completely harrowing and terrifying. The Shazam That Laughs starts fighting some people in the land. And that is when Black Adam rises to the occasion and starts a fight with him.

And let me just say: it is completely awesome.

Much of the issue is these two titans fighting. And I was okay with that! The fight is so dramatic and it is just so well drawn that I completely  loved it. We eventually end up where we started off in the beginning of the issue.

There is a nice twist at the end. I loved the trap that Black Adam set up for the Shazam That Laughs. It is a beautiful moment and the twist really works here. I had a lot of fun reading this and it ends nicely.

This was an enjoyable and well done little one shot. The only thing that was sad at the end is that you feel like there should be more Black Adam stories. Jenkins and Miranda do an excellent job with this and it really is a nice little gem.

RATING: A-
