‘Action Comics #1017’ (review)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by John Romita ,Jr.
Published by DC Comics

This issue has a reunion of sorts with Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita Jr. working on a comic book again!

They did some great work over at Marvel together and now they are collaborating again at Action Comics!

Can they work their magic and make this book an exciting and interesting read finally?

The first few pages are very exciting!

We get to see a beaten Clark being helped to his feet by Wonder Woman and an armored Batman! There is destruction all around. Just what is going on here?

We find out quickly right on the next page. The three of them find themselves surrounded by a powered up Lex Luthor and his Legion of Doom!

Everybody ramps up for a fight! It looks to be absolutely spectacular!

And then, we cut back to a day prior. We get to see Clark talk to Ms. Leone, the new owner of The Daily Planet. Clark probes her a little bit. Then, some sort of projectile comes whizzing by the building! Clark becomes Superman to investigate the projectile and deal with it.

At this point, this issue was actually pretty interesting.

He comes across a newly formed arena of terror. This scene is wonderfully illustrated by John Romita, Jr. and it has the perfect sense of dread. Gorillas from Gorilla City appear and start beating Clark down. This was actually a pretty exciting sequence to read!

We get to see Clark go back to the Planet and reassess. Then, another incident happens. By the end of the issue, Clark realizes just who is responsible for all of this chaos: Lex Luthor. That is pretty much where the issue ends.

The set up of this issue is wonderful. But not a lot happens after. This is a result of the writing from Bendis.

Everything is so compressed that it feels like very little happens. That is really the shame of it. It feels like it should be better than it actually is.

RATING: B
