‘Batman Universe #6’ (review)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Nick Derington
Published by DC Comics

“You gotta love livin’ in a Universe with dis guy.”

“Who?”

“Bubba who do you think?”

All good things must come to an end, I suppose.

It’s too bad. This really has been one of the most enjoyable comics I’ve read in some time.

As a project it’s been an excellent example of good old-fashion adventure-time super hero storytelling. That’s real good to see, in an era of over-done and over-hyped.

But it’s also just been done incredibly well.

Good to see that Brian Bendis positively excels doing short form. He should constrain himself more often.

And let it be noted that he and Nick Derington seem to work very, very, (very), well together. I, for one, would love to see them team up for much more. But so long as Derington continues to sign up for more projects, I’ll be happy. (I hear Green Arrow might need a creative team.)

For now though, we have one last issue of great comic goodness in which to save the day, save the universe (or Batman’s anyway), and wrap things up.

Now that Batman has uncovered the truth, that an ancient, probably broken, White Lantern ring with near infinite power over time and space has been responsible for sending him all over… well, time and space, it seems that the ring’s program wants to select a new owner.

Batman’s one of those candidates. Which isn’t good for him. Question is, will not accepting the ring’s power actually work out better for him?

When Vandal Savage is the other candidate?

Probably not.

At any rate it’s all a great excuse for the entire Green Lantern Corp to make an appearance. There’s even a sighting of Kyle Rayner in there, which is certainly appropriate.

Still and all, things get downright existential for Batman.

And that’s just fine. I mean it’s not like we really needed any more proof that the world is better with a Batman in it.

But it sure is nice to get this one anyway.

Great job folks! Thanks so much!

Next Issue: Hey, hey what can I say – just keep tuning in. Same time. Same Bat-channel. Who knows what might show up?
