From Online Casino to Console Games – Does ‘Game of Thrones’ Have the Potential to be the Biggest Franchise Ever?

Game of Thrones was one of the biggest television events of the decade and, at its peak, attracted 19.3 million viewers. The HBO series set mainly in the fictional land of Westeros had it all; dragons, swords, betrayal, and constant twists. Its immense popularity meant that viewers couldn’t get enough of the action. They wanted more. This led to games across a vast array of different platforms including iGaming and mobile. The fact that Game of Thrones has finished won’t affect the franchise’s dominance. In fact, in the next few years, the universe could get even bigger.

When viewers had to endure the agonizing wait between seasons of the drama based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, they were desperate to get their GOT fix in any way possible. One of the best ways to do this was by playing Telltale Games’ role-playing game named after the series. The decision-based adventure followed a brand new, original storyline that dovetailed with the events of the actual series. It was met with widespread approval, but didn’t fully satisfy players’ need for an open-world game set in the GOT universe.

One of the other huge games to keep players entertained was Microgaming’s Game of Thrones slot, which unsurprisingly has become one of the top-rated online casino slots on the market across the various sites. The game features the epic title music of the show, and the symbols on the reels are the great houses of Westeros. There is a side game as well, which allows players to flip Arya Stark’s Braavosi coin in the hope of progression.

Despite the fact that the main series has ended, the games remain popular to this day. And while playing them, fans can even drink GOT wine. These classics should continue to attract players in the future as a number of GOT spinoffs are set to be released. According to reports, there are at least five ideas for future series based in the same universe. If any of these enjoy the same success as Game of Thrones, then there will almost certainly be more slot games and RPGs based on them for players to enjoy.

One of the GOT spinoffs was rumored to feature Naomi Watts in an original story set 1000 years before the events of the HBO fantasy. However, it was recently reported that this series didn’t get past the pilot stage. For that reason, the more likely option now is the House of the Dragon series which will focus on the Targaryen’s rise to prominence around 300 years before John Snow was born. Viewers may be able to relate to this one more, as House Targaryen featured strongly in Game of Thrones.

If there was one thing that everyone loved about GOT, it was the dragons. A series which details the Targaryen ascent to power will almost certainly feature more of the winged beasts. If the show makes it past the pilot and is commissioned for a series, it could lead to some more awesome games. It seems as though the GOT universe could represent the biggest pop culture franchise in the world in the next few years.
