Greg Rucka interrupts our regularly scheduled program to present the funeral of General Sam Lane.
The immediate aftermath of Event Leviathan is more personal for Lois Lane than another character in the DC Universe, which is why the murder investigation carrying this series was pushed off to the side this month.
Mike Perkins’ artwork takes the bulk of the emotional narrative as dreary panels of the funeral service spoke for themselves. Lois is the keeper of secrets, and she holds onto one more for her father, which is a severe burden to carry.
Greg Rucka’s script very much makes the reader witness the beginning of Lois’ mourning process. Lois reminisces on days gone by as her relationship with her father was tumultuous.
However, there were also some bright spots as well. There is one flashback moment where Sam is talking to Lois while she is holding baby Jon Kent. The curl in the middle of Jon’s forehead is a dead giveaway that he’s Superman’s kid.
Of course, Sam doesn’t pick up on the hint, which was a sweet and subtle way of injecting humor into a somber story. It can be jarring to a reader when a comic book takes a sharp narrative turn for an issue or two.
However, from a marketing perspective, most of the people who read this series probably read Event Leviathan. Rucka and Perkins do a great job of adapting a significant element of a line-wide crossover while making this series feel like its own.
