Well, here it is. This is the issue where Superman makes his identity public. Is it a cheap stunt by DC? Or is it going to lead to some exciting stories ahead? Time will tell.
I will say at the moment that writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Ivan Reis have done a very fine and commendable job on this issue.
The beginning of the issue has Superman having all of the planet’s human voices in his head giving him guilt. He is flying down to give a press conference. We then flashback a week to see what led up to this point. It is a little annoying having a flashback so early on, but whatever.
We see a meeting in space between Superman and Adam Strange. They have a conversation. Adam Strange gives Superman some advice about unloading himself of some of the stress he carries. It seems simple and a little weird but ultimately Clark decides to reveal his identity to the entire world at large.
He starts small, however. This is the best part of the book. There is a beautiful moment told without words where he tells Perry White. This is the best scene of the book.
He then tells Jimmy Olsen. This scene is especially well thought out and I liked it very much. It is very simple and sweet.
He then has a conversation with Lois Lane about these revelations and what he has to do next. We then are brought back to the press conference at the beginning of the issue. Clark then reveals to the world his true identity. He explains his reasons why he is doing this and then he flies away.
We also get to see Luthor’s reaction to it all. The question is then asked “What’s next?” It is a good question that I can’t wait to find out the answer. Bendis and Reis have opened up a can of worms. Now it is time to see what comes of it.
