‘John Constantine: Hellblazer #3’ (review)

Written by Simon Spurrier
Art by Aaron Campbell
Published by DC Comics

I have to hand to to writer Simon Spurrier and artist Aaron Campbell. They have really brought back the flavor of John Constantine.

For the last ten or so years, we have gotten a really watered down version of the character. Now we have a John Constantine that has an edge again and it is nice to have that to look forward to each month.

Constantine has tracked down the person responsible for killing the gang members on Peckham Rye. He finds out that it is only one person who is doing it. The person is using magic to commit these murders. And that is where we see Constantine at the beginning of the issue: Facing off against this villain.

The two of them have a conversation and basically are getting ready for a fight. But it seems to be more of a mind-game this go round. We get to see some past events. These two are in a duel and only one is going to be the victor.

Of course, being that it is John Constantine’s book, he is the winner. The image of Constantine’s victory is the best of the series thus far.Things wrap up pretty well. But there is another threat just around the corner.

The last page of the issue has a cool image, giving us all a heads up of what is coming next.

This is a nice book that is both a callback to when Constantine was good and it also breaks into new territory. It is exactly how I love this character. Let’s keep him this way this time.

RATING: A-
