There are a lot of different stories and comics out there right now about Harley Quinn; this is one of the better ones.
Kami Garcia has such a great take on both Harley and the Joker that it feels completely fresh. It is a story we have seen before but it written in such a cool and unique way that I was intrigued throughout.
The opening pages set in the present have Harley Quinn at the scene of a crime. She is looking at it for clues.
The killer has made something of an art piece by removing the victim’s body fat.
Commissioner Gordon talks to Harley. She goes to the precinct and asks about Victor Zsasz to see if he is still in custody. This killing that has happened seems very much like something that he would do. It turns out that he is locked up.
So who then, is the killer?
We then see a scene that is a flashback. We get to see a young kid dressed up as a clown. Then we get to see how his father handles him. This links up to the previous scene as the young kid one day becomes The Joker. The scenes are pretty brutal overall.
We then get to see a scene set in the present with the Joker.
It is a very different take on the Joker. He is a version that is more of a punk than previous versions. He almost reminded me of the Jared Leto version of the character. This scene serves to increase the mystery that is going on a little bit more.
The Joker does play a big part in the second half of the book. It is very cool. We also get one hell of a cliffhanger here that made me sit up. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of it. It was really cool.
The story is pretty standard although it does have some nice twists and turns. The artwork by Mayhew and Suayan is the best part. These two artists have created one hell of a look for this piece. I look forward to seeing what they come up with next in this story.
