‘Justice League Dark #18’ (review)

Written by James Tynion IV
Art by Alvaro Martinez Bueno,
and Raul Fernandez
Published by DC Comics

“Wake up Diana. Like I said before… you’re already running out of time.”

But then, so is Circe, by the look of things.

With triumph in her grasp, the Injustice League Dark at her side, and the greater portion of all remaining Magic burning through her, Circe has only to reclaim the Eclipso diamond from Zatanna to wrap things up.

But she’s only got one more issue left, in a narrative arc that storytellers James Tynion and Alvaro Martinez Bueno have been spinning out for us since the summer of 2018, to get the job done. And even though the JL Dark is in full retreat, with their backs against the wall, that may prove more difficult than she imagines.

To be fair she has every reason to expect success.

Even the Hall of Justice’s last line of defense, one fortified by the gods and angels themselves, is little more than a delay before the power she now has at her command – as she demonstrates in rather spectacular fashion.

Thankfully, Wonder Woman and her team may have a few things going for them yet.

Like John Constantine, who’s right there in the thick of things and by Zatanna’s side – just as her father, the long-lost magician Zatarra must have intended, when he set his plans in motion so long ago.

Or a decidedly unexpected turn of fortune for Diana, in the hands of the Upside Down Man, one that should be quite a shock for Circe.

And then there are all those incredibly powerful magical artifacts in the Hall of Justice. And a young magical apprentice with enough nobility and youth to do something very reckless with one of them in particular..

With so many elements to the threat of the Otherkind in play, and so many important players who have been involved in this fight for the ultimate fate of Magic, it’s a little hard to imagine everything coming to a neat conclusion so quickly.

But if the twists and turns of this issue are any indication, it seems clear that Tynion has things well in hand. It is certainly very clear he’s been playing the long game to get here.

So, get ready. Because by the end of this issue, the stage has been set for a finale fight to the finish that is sure to have a few more surprises yet in store for us… and seems well on target to upend everything we thought we knew about the balance of Magic in the DCU, for some time to come.

Next Issue: Abracadabra
