I have to confess: I have never read any book with this character before. That being said, I have always heard good things. And hey, its written by Kieron Gillen and he is a fairly decent writer. So, I decided to go and give this a shot!
This is a fresh start for the former Charlton Comics character. And it is a good one, if a bit strange and wacky.
In the beginning of the book, we get to see a strange alien attack on a city. It is very reminiscent of the ending of the book Watchmen.
The opening pages show the destruction of the city in a very detailed way. A bunch of different heroes are asking for Peter Cannon’s help in destroying these pesky alien invaders. Peter Cannon thinks about it and he eventually agrees to help destroy these creatures.
And he does so.
They are hardly a match for Thunderbolt. He then figures out who might be responsible for it all.
Apparently, there is an evil Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt from another dimension with an evil plan.
The rest of the book is basically the “good” Peter Cannon combating the “evil” Peter Cannon. It is very creative and a lot of fun. We do get more than a handful of Watchmen references. We also get a few other references from some of Alan Moore’s other books, especially some of the work he did with Eddie Campbell.
This is a really cool volume. The story is fast paced and fun and the art is very well done too. There seems to be more places that the creative team could take this character by the end of the book.
If they do another series, I will be the first one to line up to buy it this time, rather than coming in later like this.
