‘Batgirl #44’ (review)

Written by Cecil Castellucci
Art by Cian Tormey
Published by DC Comics

I have loved the direction that writer Cecil Castellucci has taken this book.

She has written a book that has standout characterizations and decent action scenes. It has been a lot of fun reading this now as opposed to before she came on.

It has been a pretty awesome change of events.

The opening of this issue has Batgirl fighting a dragon.

While normally I would scoff at this notion, I found myself really having a great time. The writing is so fun and so well constructed that I found myself absolutely loving this.

Batgirl regroups with her friend Jason.

They quickly try to formulate a plan to defeat this terrible creatures (more dragons appear). But it seems like they might in fact be too late. They dragons may have indeed cornered them.

What can they do?

The rest of the issue is basically Batgirl and Jason fighting against these dragons. They do get some help along the way. The two of them eventually find a way out of their predicament. Then, there is a twist at the end that is pretty cool. We found out then that Jason may actually be the one responsible for this whole entire mess.

Castellucci keeps the book moving in a very fun way. The art and the design work by Tormey is nothing short of excellent. He is a rising star for sure. I really enjoyed this issue and the turn that this book has done.

It’s a good time.

RATING: A-
