‘Spy Island #1’ (review)

Written by Chelsea Cain
Art by Elise McCall
Published by Dark Horse Comics

Chelsea Cain has had a very interesting career in comics. She has a very different writing style and I just love it. This book is another mighty fine feather in her cap. It is funny and inventive and it is unlike any other comic book out there.

The book introduces us to super spy extraordinaire Nora Freud.

At the beginning of this story, Nora is given one hell of a great assignment. She is stationed on a beautiful tropical island!

What could possibly go wrong here?

Well, we quickly learn that the tropical island paradise is basically on the lip of the Bermuda triangle.

That means anything can happen in this locale. The place also had another problem: the island is populated by all sorts of spies and some wacky and wild characters.

Cain spends this first issue world building and creating some memorable moments. And she does it all in a way that is easy to digest and never boring. She truly has a gift for making a book unique with her writing.

The art by Elise McCall is wonderful and incredibly unique. Her design work is flawless and every page is a visual treat. This is a strong debut. Although this story is only four issues, there is enough in here to make for a solid series.
