‘Hellboy And The B.P.R.D. : The Return Of Effie Kolb #1’ (review)

Written by Mike Mignola
Art by Zach Howard
Published by Dark Horse Comics

It is always a great time when you have Mike Mignola writing a Hellboy comic book. And this time he has brought along Zach Howard who is an excellent artist. Put these two together and you have one hell of a cool story.

This book is a sequel to the story “The Crooked Man.”

The issue starts off with Hellboy going to Appalachia to meet up with Tom Ferrell. Tom is at The Crooked Man’s old house. They meet and catch up but very quickly we learn that there is another reason Hellboy was called here.

One he would never expect.

Tom tells Hellboy a story about the previous owner.

He talks about a shovel that is still in Tom’s possession. They sit on the porch and talk some more.

Sara Blackburn appears and is introduced. Sara says that something is coming.

And that it is something completely evil.

We find out quickly what Sara is talking about.

Everything goes to hell really quickly. Hellboy and Sara head into the woods to see if they can figure out how to stop this evil. Then an evil being attacks Tom! All hell breaks loose in the woods!

And we get one heck of a cliffhanger.

Mignola knows this character like the back of his hand. This is an exciting story that doesn’t let up. He works so incredibly well with Howard, it is uncanny. Howard is an excellent storyteller and the whole thing just works. This is great!

RATING: A
