‘Adventureman #1’ (review)

Written by Matt Fraction
Art by Rachel Dodson, Terry Dodson
Published by Image Comics

Matt Fraction is a very idiosyncratic writer. He creates some of the most peculiar and wonderfully different stories out there.

This book is no exception.

With Advenureman, Fraction has written one hell of a new book that is full of invention. It is a triple sized first issue, yet I wanted more immediately!

The book starts off by showing us the world of Adventureman!

Who is Adventureman, you ask?

Why, he is only the greatest pulp hero of all time!

The first part of this issue shows us one of his adventures.

It is full of all the tropes of a good pulp, too. It is fun and adventurous without even a hint of irony.

Adventureman goes through all of his paces. He then seemingly may have been killed at the hands of his ultimate nemesis Baron Bizarre. We see that he is about to experience something called the Macabrapocalyse.

And then we cut to 80 years in the future.

We then meet a single mother named Claire and her son Tommy.

They are the only two who seem to remember the Adventureman sagas and they are both Adventurefans.

We get a quick introduction to them before they are thrown directly into the narrative.

Can Adventureman be far behind? It gets pretty wild from this point forward.

The story is fast and is just damn enjoyable. And I don’t know what they did to make Terry Dodson draw so well here but it is impressive. This is for sure his best work to date by far.

This is an awesome first issue.  Consider me an Adventurefan!

RATING: A
