We haven’t had a good Green Hornet book in quite awhile! I have always enjoyed the character but there really haven’t been any memorable Green Hornet stories since probably when Matt Wagner was writing the book.
While this isn’t the best story to feature the character, this debut issue is entertaining, if a bit slight.
The opening scene has a Sgt. Rock type of character talking about how he has the Green Hornet in his crosshairs. That’s right, we get to see the Green Hornet at odds with the United States Army. Can this be the end of the costumed, masked avenger?
Green Hornet tells Kato to hightail it out of the place that they are in. Kato refuses. The Green Hornet also has an infant in his hands.
Just what is going on here and how did they we end up in this place?
Well, that is what the rest of the issue shows us. It is all good too right up until the end.
Before that we see a lot of the groundwork for that stunning opening scene come into play. We get to see Britt Reid and Kato doing their thing in their civilian identities. We see a lot of buildup. It is all very well written by Lobdell.
That is when an alien appears in the book at the end.
It felt wrong and it didn’t seem to fit this character.
I will give the creative team the benefit of the doubt and hopefully they make gold from this. This is a decent book other than the seeming forthcoming “alien” plot.
The art is the best part and, even if the story blows it, it will worth reading just to see the magnificent art by Anthony Marques.
