‘Batgirl #48’ (review)

Written by Cecil Castellucci
Art by Robbi Rodriguez
Published by DC Comics

This is one hell of an interesting issue.

Writer Cecil Castellucci has done something extremely interesting here. She has decided to use the current “Joker War” storyline as a platform to tell an interesting character driven story.

There is some pretty great stuff happening here.

Barbara was injured and she is back using the wheelchair. It is a sad thing to see, and Castellucci really gets to the heart of the character with this character development.

This book is all about the aftermath of a tragic moment.

We get to see Barbara struggling with this all happening again. We get to see how her father, James Gordon, reacts to it all.

We see a fight between Commissioner Gordon and his son, James, both blaming and taking some blame.

It is a tough read.

We also get to see Barbara trying to figure out a way out of this familiar predicament. She may be down but it doesn’t look like she is out. The issue shows her working to get out of a nightmare she never would have hoped to deal with ever again.

This issue is extremely well done. The story is strong. And the artwork by Robbi Rodriguez is really great. The art is surprisingly emotional, yet full of hope.

I think this may be the best issue of this series.
