This issue and the previous one have been somewhat better in terms of quality.
James Tynion IV is not my favorite writer, but he seems to be doing a somewhat better job on the latest “Joker War” story. There is still a lot to be desired but we are certainly getting there.
I did hate the beginning though.
Tynion takes us to Gotham City “years from now.” We see a kid listening in to the future law enforcement’s signal. Something big is about to happen. That is when we see a futuristic Batman coming by on a motorcycle, chasing Mr. Freeze who is in a van.
Batman takes on Mr. Freeze and his family.
This felt a bit like diet Grant Morrison but whatever. They fight and it is really boring. It is not even strange, which would have been welcome. It felt like Tynion was trying too hard and it definitely comes across that way.
We get to see future Batman consult with future Alfred (wait, he’s alive?). That is when Batman wakes up. Harley Quinn is there. The two of them have a conversation, and it seems like Harley is going to help Bruce through this.
The rest of the issue is basically about seeing the Joker’s plan come into play. It is okay and enjoyable enough.
The art by Jorge Jimenez is top notch, however. He is really taking to this title well and the art is the best part for sure.
